Introduction

Extractive metallurgy is the art and science of extracting metals from their ores by chemical methods. The extractive metallurgy is divided into three areas of hydrometallurgy, electrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy, all of which can be researched in this laboratory. Laboratory of Metal Extraction Principles for undergraduate students is held in this lab. There are also numerous research projects performed in this laboratory in the field of metal extraction by classical pyrometallurgy methods, thermal synthesis of new materials and nanomaterials, leaching, solvent extraction, hydrometallurgical, and electrometllurgy processes.

Equipment

- Potentiostat: Potentiostat is used for various electrochemical tests to measure corrosion rate, draw cyclic voltammograms, apply pulses, etc.
- Cylindrical Furnace (1250 °C) with two thermal zones and controlled atmosphere: This furnace is horizontal with a chamber of 5 cm inner diameter, has two independent thermal zones, and is capable of controlling atmosphere of the reactions and conducting experiments in oxide, reductive and neutral atmospheres.
- Cylindrical Furnace (1400 °C) with controlled atmosphere: This furnace has a cylindrical silicon carbide heat chamber with an inner diameter of 5 cm and can be adjusted horizontally or vertically.
- Cylindrical Furnace (1250 °C) with controlled atmosphere: The furnace chamber can be used horizontally or vertically and performing experiments in specified atmospheres is possible in this furnace.
- Maffle Furnace (1100 °C): Can be used for simple heating experiments such as roasting, calcination and melting reactions.
- Pelletizing Machine: Pellets of few millimeters to several centimeters can be prepared using this machine.
- Connectable Rectifiers: Existing rectifiers are able to generate up to 50 volts potential difference and existing multimeters can record instantaneous information by connecting to a computer.
- Signal Generator Device: This device is capable of generating potential difference in DC and AC modes with different frequencies and waveforms.
Other laboratory equipment including heater, mechanical and magnetic stirrer, constant temperature bath, 1 milligram digital scale, and UV optical thermometer for measuring temperatures up to 1600 °C are available.
